View of the Sea
Taken from the Spanish word meaning View of the Sea,
Miramar overlooks Kingston Bay from fields where Wampanoag Native Americans
once lived and where the Pilgrims first settled. The Retreat Center provides
programs of renewal for clergy and religious, lay people, single persons, married
couples, religious educators, parish councils, Confirmation candidates and anyone
who seeks peace and a richer relationship with God. The Center is operated by
the Society of the Divine Word, (in Latin, Societas Verbi Divini or SVD), popularly
known as Divine Word Missionaries, a congregation of more than 6000 Catholic
Missionary priests and brothers who serve the poor in 60 countries worldwide.
To set the captives free
To give sight to the blind
To heal the broken-hearted
To proclaim a year of favor
from the Lord
The Lord has granted to Miramar the favor and grace
to participate in this mission for the greater part of a century. As a retreat
center, Miramar provides both a holy place and programs suited to the needs
of those who come here. Some arrive seeking to be renewed and refreshed; some
arrive to tear down and rebuild; some who are broken hearted come to be healed.
It is our prayer that, whoever comes, goes away encouraged to continue the journey
of life with greater hope and trust in the God who walks with them.
